Jāņu svinības Tērvetē ir sezonas visgaidītākais notikums. Nāk jauni un veci, tuvi un tāli – līgotāji pulcējas pie Lielās Mājas un vasarnieki steidz sagatvoties Jāņabērnu uzņemšanai. Dienas gaitā norisinās Jāņu jūdzes sacensības, tiek vīti vainagi un pušķota Lielā Māja, dejo tautas, dzied koris un līgotāji.
Midsummer (Jāņi) celebrations in Tērvete are the most anticipated event of the season. Young and old, near and far, everyone gathers to celebrate, while summer residents busy themselves preparing to welcome the Jāņabērni (Midsummer revelers). Throughout the day, the traditional Jāņi Mile race takes place, wreaths are woven, and the Big House is decorated with greenery. Folk dancers perform, the choir sings, and celebrants fill Tērvete with song and laughter.
Jāņu gājienā tiek aplīgotas Tērvetes pļavas un lauki, meži un zvēri, kaimiņi un draugi. Jāņabērni ienāk katrā mājā, kur tos sagaida aplīgošanās – dziesmu dziedāšana vienam pret otru, pasmejoties par dzīves notikumiem un Tērvetes saimei aktuālām tēmām. Kad nu mutes sausas – līgotājus veldzē ar alu, dod Jāņu sieru un dažādas uzkodas. Ir mājas, kas darina savu alu, ir mājas, kur var izgaršot dažādākos sierus. Kad draudzības stiprinātas un spēki atgriezušies, gājiens dodas tālāk uz nākamām mājām.
During the Jāņi procession, the fields and meadows of Tērvete, its forests and wildlife, neighbors and friends are all celebrated in song. The Jāņabērni visit every home, where they are welcomed with aplīgošanās—a playful exchange of songs sung back and forth, often poking fun at recent events and topics familiar to the Tērvete community. When voices grow dry, the revelers are refreshed with beer, Jāņi cheese, and a variety of snacks. Some households proudly serve their own homemade beer, while others offer an array of cheeses to sample. Once friendships have been strengthened and energy restored, the procession continues on to the next home.
Uz Tērvetes Jāņu gājienu droši var ņemt mūzikas instrumentus, rībināt bungas un čīgāt vijoles. Dažā labā sētā Jāņabērni uzdejo dančus un iet rotaļās.
Everyone is encouraged to bring musical instruments to the Tērvete Jāņi procession. Drums resound, violins sing, and music fills the air. In many courtyards, the Jāņabērni dance traditional folk dances and take part in games and circle activities, adding to the festive spirit of the celebration.
Vasaras saulgriežu svinības ir parašām bagātas. Tās kopj arī Tērvetieši. Jāņos jākurina ugunskurs un jālīgo līdz rīta gaismai. Drosmīgie lec pāri ugunskuram, lai iegūtu laimi un labu veselību. Ugunī arī jāsadedzina pērnā gada vainagi, lai atvadītos pagājušā Saules gada un ieietu jaunā, līdzi ņemot tikai labo, un slikto atstājot aiz sevis. Jālīgo un jādzied līdz rītam, jo kas gulēja Jāņu nakti, gulēs visu vasariņu. Jāņos jālustējas līdz rīta gaismai, jāmeklē papardes ziedu un jāļaujas mūsu tradīciju spēkam plūst caur mums.
The Summer Solstice celebration is rich with traditions, many of which are lovingly preserved by the people of Tērvete. A bonfire must be lit, and songs must be sung until the break of dawn. The brave leap over the fire in hopes of gaining good fortune and good health.
The previous year’s wreaths are also burned in the flames, symbolically bidding farewell to the past solar year and entering the new one while carrying forward only what is good and leaving behind what no longer serves us.
Songs and celebrations continue through the night, for tradition says that whoever sleeps on Jāņi night will sleep away the whole summer. Midsummer is a time to rejoice until sunrise, search for the legendary fern blossom, and allow the enduring spirit of our traditions to flow through us.
